(2012, 2015 - 2016, place to return)
Living at Nusa Penida island for almost a year comes along with exploring the Bali island. Bali has two faces. It is still a Mecca for yoga and lovers of the Eat, Pray, Love movie :) But it brings also many tourists. So from places you have planned to visit, you have mixed emotions. The second, much nicer face of Bali, is mainly the North and West coast. Those destinations are not touristy and popular, so finally you still can live cheaply and discover breathtaking areas. Waterfalls, valleys, rocks, rice fields and special villages, where people still live simple lives and within their believes.
Some of the tourist attractions you still should pay a visit to. Mainly the temples or zoo, will not disappoint you, espeically if you are lucky enough to pick the quiet day with no ceremonies. Make sure that you stay away from Kuta and Jimbaran, as there you would feel like you are back in Europe and you pay a fortune for a drink or meal!
The best way to discover Bali island is a scooter, no doubt. You are free, you can go anywhere and even if locals try to charge you, easy ignore them and explore by our own.
Bali is definitely a place to return and stop by anytime. The atmosphere catches you and the proper Balinese massages and relaxation treatment is a must to come back to.
