Tanzania - Pemba island

 (October 2014)

Everyone who goes to Tanzania dreams of Zanzibar and nobody hears of Pemba island. It is very similar to going to Egypt and staying in Hurghada, without visiting Dahab!

I was lucky enough to have a friend of a friend who owns a dive center and resort, Swahili divers, at Pemba island. The deal was to come and stay, dive and leave them with a portfolio. An easy barter deal.

Pemba is an absolutely stunning island just another 20 minutes from Zanzibar by small plane. Untouched nature, white beaches, and people who still believe in magic. They beleive that If you take a photo of them, the demon will take their soul, but of you have money, you of course find a way.

Pemba is beautiful local island with small and slightly larger villages. The main business is fishing, as still not too many tourists come here, this is most certainly to its benefit.

You can dive the beautiful dive sites, where you see incredible macro stuff, and of course you can rent a bike or bicycle and do your island hoping.

If you plan visiting Tanzania, skip Zanzibar. Pemba still shows the real life and you will stay in symbiosis with typical African environment.
